Well-know to our audiences as both a director and an actor, Richard Garvin is currently directing the smash comedy hit Run for Your Wife. In recent Seasons, he also directed Barefoot in the Park, and played the roles of Roger Elizabeth De Bris in The Producers and the villainous Jud Fry in Oklahoma. Richard graduated from Stockton’s Edison High School, where he studied with Stockton Civic Theatre stalwarts Donovan Cummings and Judy Caruso Williamson. He then attended Pacific Conservatory of the Performing Arts in Santa Maria, where he was a student of Donovan Marley. After spending 12 years as an equity player in professional theatre, Richard returned home to Stockton and has worked on our stage ever since. He is married to the daughter of a well-known SCT family, Liz Kastner Garvin. We’re very proud to have Richard as a member of our company.
Tap your way into Stockton Civic Theatre’s production of 42ND STREET, directed by Jim Coleman! Auditions for the show are March 27–28, and performance dates are June 29-July 24, 2011. If you haven’t seen 42ND STREET, rent the movie, and you’ll see how vital great tap dancing is to the show.
Consequently, SCT, in collaboration with Elaine Orimo’s Stockton Ballet School, is offering a 6 week tap workshop for those interested in auditioning. The choreographer is Evelyn Barney, a fabulous tap dancer herself, who works for Elaine at the school. Workshops will take place on Wednesday evenings from 7:30–8:30. The dates for the workshop are February 9, 16, 23 and March 2, 9 and 23. The fee is $60.00 for all 6 classes. A small number of partial scholarships will be available, but you should apply immediately. The workshop is open to dancers and actors ages 16 and over. Some previous knowledge of tap is preferred, but not mandatory. If you don’t think you need the whole workshop, drop-ins to classes are $15.00 per class. This offer is available only to people interested in auditioning for 42ND STREET. To join in the fun, call Stockton Civic Theatre, (209) 473‑2400.
